Blue Cross Blue Shield Enters HIPAA/HITECH settlement

Blue Cross pays $1.5 million in HIPAA/HITECH settlement after 57 unencrypted computer hard drives with identifying information for more than 1 million patients (including social security numbers) were stolen from a facility in Tennessee.

Government alleges that Blue Cross didn’t do enough to prevent the theft.

Encrypting computer drives isn’t that hard, folks.
